Netflix migrated to a microservices architecture to overcome the scalability, reliability, and development bottlenecks of their aging monolithic system. Following a major 2008 database outage, they moved to AWS to achieve independent service scaling, improve fault tolerance (isolating failures), and enable faster, independent team deployments.
