Today, rollups are often presented as the default way Ethereum scales, but this was not how the journey started. In this video, we look at how Ethereum scaling actually evolved over time — before rollups became the dominant approach. We explore early scaling solutions such as sidechains and other experiments, including examples like Polygon in its early sidechain form, xDai (now Gnosis Chain), and application-specific chains like Ronin. These systems helped reduce fees and congestion, but required different security trade-offs compared to Ethereum itself.
