This talk explores how the Open Container Initiative (OCI) format, originally designed for container images, is evolving to support a wide array of cloud-native artifacts, including Helm charts, WebAssembly (Wasm) modules, Lambda functions, and Kustomize configuration bundles. We’ll dive into how the OCI ecosystem is becoming a powerful, interoperable standard not just for deployment runtimes but for the full lifecycle of cloud-native applications. We’ll examine how tools like Argo CD, Flux, and Kargo are embracing OCI registries as first-class citizens and the benefits and tradeoffs of adopting this approach. Attendees will learn: how OCI extends beyond containers; how to package and distribute complex or binary artifacts; and how OCI compares to Git in a GitOps context.
